The new scale and corrosion inhibitor from FMC
Belclene® 494 is the new scale and corrosion inhibitor from FMC for use in open
evaporative cooling systems. It combines the functionality of both polymer and phosphonate
in one molecule to provide the carbonate and corrosion control properties associated with
phosphonates as well as the phosphate and iron scale control normally associated with
sulphonated copolymers. This multifunctionality allows substitution of two raw materials
with one, thereby reducing formulated product cost.
Description
Belclene 494 is a multifunctional scale and corrosion control additive for open
evaporative cooling systems. The active ingredient is a phosphonated, sulphonated
carboxylic acid. The CAS number is 156105-39-4.

Stability
No loss of product activity has been observed during 12 weeks' exposure to the following
conditions:
storage at 0°C
storage at 50°C
exposure to UV Light
freeze/thaw recovery cycle
dilution at pH 2
dilution at pH 12
The product is not affected by exposure to chlorine or other oxidising biocides. This has
been demonstrated by chlorine consumption tests as well as by GPC and NMR analysis.
Belclene 494 is thermally stable at temperatures up to 280-C (536-9.
Tests have also shown that Belclene 494 has excellent calcium tolerance as shown in figure
1.

Belclene 494 is fully compatible with other additives typically used in cooling water
formulations.
Monitoring and control
The presence of phosphorus on the molecule means that Belclene 494 can be measured
by the standard Hach® phosphonate method. Laboratory tests have shown a straight line
correlation between product concentration and UV absorbance at 890nm from 0-20 mg/l active
product. (0-0.6 mg/l as P)
The test reagent concentration should be selected and calibration curves prepared as
appropriate to the particular formulation and application.
