Ethylene glycol is a two-carbon molecule containing two hydroxyl groups, which gives it lower viscosity and slightly improved heat transfer properties compared to propylene glycol. The lower viscosity allows for easier pumping and improved flow characteristics, while the enhanced heat transfer efficiency can provide greater freeze protection at lower glycol concentrations.
Inhibited ethylene glycol is generally more economical than inhibited propylene glycol, however, it is not recommended for applications where there is potential contact with food, beverages, or potable water systems.
